Animal Control

Modified Operations at Shelter in Response to Novel Coronavirus 19:

As a vital service to the people and pets of the Municipality of Anchorage, Anchorage Animal Care & Control remains open, although with limited and modified services. We are working hard to create a safe environment for those who need to access our services and our staff who is here to help. Some of those changes include appointment-based services, gathering information over the phone before an appointment, offering more forms that can be completed online, and protocols that limit interaction between staff and visitors. We appreciate your understanding as we continue to modify our operations in response to the ever-changing public health crisis.

Limited Services:

Adoptions: Our normal  adoption process is temporarily suspended. We are featuring select animals on our social media sites (Facebook and Instagram) and scheduling adoption appointments for these animals only. Please bring only 1 - 2 family members to the adoption appointment. Please complete the adoption application which will be submitted to Customer Service before arriving for your appointment. Appointments can be made at 343-8122 (M - F, 11 am - 7 pm and S - S 10 am - 6 pm).

Looking for or claiming a lost pet: When making an appointment to look for or claim a lost animal, Customer Service will inform owners of what is needed to prove ownership and discuss fees as required in Municipal Code Title 17. We ask that owners come prepared with the required proof of ownership and information on their pet's vaccination history. Appointments can be made at 343-8122 (M - F, 11 am - 7 pm and S - S 10 am - 6 pm).

Found animals: We encourage Good Samaritans who find safe-to-handle stray animals to foster them until either the owner is located or the finder can no longer care for the animal. Finders can utilize the information on our Lost Pets web page to help the animal be located by his/her owner. If you cannot find the owner and are unable to foster the animal, please contact Customer Service at 343-8122 (M - F, 11 am - 7 pm and S - S 10 am - 6 pm).

Owner surrendering of animals: We are limiting the acceptance of owner surrenders of animals in order to ensure space for animals who absolutely need us. Pet owners are encouraged to re-home healthy and behaviorally-sound animals themselves by using the ReHome service provided by Adopt-a-Pet. Please contact Customer Service at 343-8122 if you are in an emergency situation and do not have anyone to take in your animal.

Owner-requested euthanasia: We encourage pet owners to make appointments with their private veterinarian when possible. If you are unable to take your pet to a private veteranarian, please make an appointment at 343-8122 (M - F, 11 am - 7 pm and S - S 10 am - 6 pm).

Suspended services:

Municipality of Anchorage dog license sales at the shelter. Dog licenses can be purchased online.

In-person questions regarding enforcement cases. Enforcement staff can be contacted at 343-8119.

Renting of traps for loose cats and rabbits.
If a community member has their own trap, we are requesting that they close the trap until this public health crisis is over. If you have a trapped cat or rabbit and know where the animal lives, please return the animal to the owner. If you do not know where the animal lives and it is sick or injured, please contact Customer Service at 343-8122 to make appointment to bring the animal to us. If the animal is healthy, please consider fostering him/her and looking for the owner (see information above) or letting the animal go -  many of the trapped cats we receive are indoor/outdoor pets who have a home nearby who will return home.

Night drop kennels will be locked to the public and only available for the use of the Anchorage Police and Fire Departments.
