Municipal Business Licenses

Municipal licensing regulations can be found in AMC Title 10.

You are not licensed to operate your business until you receive the actual license/permit.  For information on terms and fees, and to download an application; select from the following licenses or permits issued by the Municipal Clerk's Office:  

2018 Renewal Information:

A renewal reminder postcard will be mailed to you one month in advance of the expiration date of your license/permit.  During a lapse in renewal, your license/permit is considered invalid.

When applying for a renewal, please be prepared to provide:

  • Completed Application - All applications must be notarized.  Free notary service is available at the Municipal Clerk's Office.
  • Picture Identification
  • Cash, Check, or Credit Card Payment
  • Copy of State of Alaska Business License -  All businesses operating in the State of Alaska require a State of Alaska Business License.
  • Other Required Documentation Related to License/Permit if applicable
  • Additional Licensing and/or Permitting may be required by other municipal departments for businesses that operate in Anchorage.  

You may file your renewal in-person at the Municipal Clerk's Office.  (While on business at City Hall, free parking is located in the parking lot behind the building on 7th Avenue, between F and G Streets.)  Or, you may mail your renewal to the Municipal Clerk's Office.  For information about the location and hours of the Municipal Clerk's Office including the mailing address, go to the Contact Information webpage.  Please include all required documentation, notarized application, and payment.

Municipal Marijuana Establishment Licenses

The Municipality of Anchorage will only be accepting applications for a new Municipal Marijuana Establishment License and Special Land Use Permit after the applicant’s State of Alaska Marijuana Establishment License application has been deemed completed by the Alaska Marijuana Control Board. For information on the State of Alaska Marijuana License, please contact the Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office.  For detailed information regarding the Municipal process, go to the Municipal  Marijuana Webpage.

A renewal reminder will be e-mailed to you on or before May 1st of the current renewal year.  Renewal applications are due no later than June 30th of the current yearRenewal applications filed July 1st through August 31st are delinquent and may result in closure of the marijuana establishment after August 31st until the Assembly approves the renewal of the license.

Municipal Liquor Licenses 

Action on Liquor Licenses by the Local Governing Body:

The Anchorage Assembly receives Liquor License applications from the State of Alaska for premises located within the Municipality of Anchorage.  Based on specific criteria laid out in the AMC 10.50, the Assembly will make a recommendation to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board for non-objection or protest of the license.

Special Land Use Permits for alcohol are required for all establishments applying for a Liquor License within the Municipality of Anchorage.  For information regarding the Application for Special Land Use Permit for Alcohol, please contact the Planning Department at 343-8211.
