Animal Control Advisory Board

Purpose of the Board:

Established by municipal code, the Animal Control Advisory Board advises the Mayor and Assembly on all matters pertaining to animal control in the Municipality of Anchorage.  The board holds monthly meetings to take public comment, discuss animal matters, and make recommendations to the city on animal care and control issues.  The Chief Animal Control Officer and the Animal Control Contractor serve as technical advisors to the board. 

Major Board Activities:

The board takes part in many issues related to animals in the municipality, particularly those addressing the health, welfare and safety of animals and people in our community.  Some of the principal matters members focus on include:

  • Strategic planning for the animal care and control services program: enhancing enforcement capabilities; increasing animals adopted, claimed, rescued, and housed; expanding public education; and projecting and prioritizing capital needs
  • Reviewing and making recommendations on municipal ordinances related to animals
  • Promoting safe and healthy use of public spaces by pets and pet owners

Board Meetings:

Meetings are generally held the fourth Thursday of each month on Microsoft Teams. Click here to view scheduled meetings. The public is welcome to attend.

Meetings of the Title 17 subcommittee are generally held the second Thursday of each month from 5:30 p.m.​ to 6:30 p.m. at AnDraft Changes to Animals in Public Places 2022.docximal Care and Control Center classroom located at 4711 Elmore Road.​ Click here to view scheduled meetings. The public is welcome to attend.

Board Members:

There are nine seats on the Board.  Members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Assembly.  Terms are 3 years and commissioners may be reappointed for an additional 3 year term. Board Member Contact List.​​​

Staff Support for the Animal Control Advisory Board:​

Proposed Revisions to Title 17​​​​​

The Anchorage Animal Control Advisory Board (Board) has been reviewing Title 17 provisions concerning animals in public places and has proposed revisions to definitions related to control of animals and to other sections in order to provide further clarification of the existing code.​

The Board took public comment in writing and at their meeting on 1/26/23.

The Board is moving forward with recommending the proposed changes to the Mayor.
