Disposal Information
The Solid Waste Disposal utility operates the Anchorage Regional Landfill, located in Eagle River, and two transfer stations (Central Transfer Station in Anchorage and the Girdwood Transfer Station), and the Materials Recovery Facility. Residential may dispose of waste and special materials at any of the facilities. Commercial waste is accepted only at the Anchorage Regional Landfill and Central Transfer Station.

Disposal Policies
Cover Your Load: All loads must be covered and secured prior to arrival at the facility. Uncovered or unsecured loads are subject to an additional charge of $30-$60. For more information, refer to AMC 26.80.50.
Wear a Vest: For your safety, SWS requires all patrons to wear safety vests on the commercial side of the Central Transfer Station (CTS), and on the working face of the Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL) at all times. For questions regarding this policy, please call (907) 343-6250.
Pay Attention: Cell Phone use is prohibited on campus, and please drive slow, 10 mph.
Special Materials: Hazardous material disposal falls under specific guidelines. Procedures for hazardous materials can be found here and the policies for additional special material disposal can be found here.
Disposal Facilities
Anchorage Regional Landfill
The Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL) is located at the intersection of the Glenn Highway and Hiland road, near the community of Eagle River, Alaska. The address is 15500 E. Eagle River Loop Rd, Eagle River, AK 99577.
Services at the Anchorage Regional Landfill include:
- Residential and commercial trash disposal,
- Recycling,
- Household hazardous waste collection.

Central Transfer Station
Located in Midtown Anchorage. The Central Transfer Station receives commercial refuse collection vehicles, residential refuse collection vehicles, and household vehicles (cars and pick-ups) from the entire Municipality of Anchorage. The refuse is consolidated and then loaded into large trailers, and transported to the Anchorage Regional Landfill for final disposal. Please yield to our big red disposal trucks while driving on campus.
- Commercial Disposal Entrance:
1050 E. 56th Ave. Commercial haulers are highly encouraged to enter 56th Ave from Old Seward Highway to minimize congestion with transfer trucks, pedestrians, and residential traffic entering off of Homer Drive.
- Residential Entrance:
1310 E 56th Avenue The preferred route for residential vehicles: East on International Road, Turn Right on Homer Drive, Turn Right on E. 56th Ave. First Left Turn. Some online maps and apps are incorrect, so please follow the directions listed here.
Services at the Central Transfer Station include:
- Residential and commercial trash disposal,
- Recycling,
- Household hazardous waste collection.
- Metals such as stoves, washers, dryers, workout equipment, BBQ grills and lawn mowers are collected seperately and recycled.
- ReUse Store: located in the Household Hazardous Waste Building. Anchorage residents can visit the reuse store to pick up any items for free up to 40 pounds, come check out what is available, items rotate often.
Construction and Demolition debris it is recommended (C&D) to be shredded at a local Recycler.
Land clearing waste, medical waste and liquid waste, hot tubs and commercially collected refrigerators are NOT accepted at the Central Transfer Station and Girdwood Transfer Station.

Safety on the Tipping Floor at CTS
Girdwood Transfer Station - RESIDENTIAL USE ONLY
Located on Ruane Road, off of the Alyeska Highway, in the community of Girdwood. You must go to the end of Ruane Road, and the facility is located on the right just before AWWU's Treatment Building.
All loads must be covered and secured prior to arrival at the facility. Uncovered or unsecured loads are subject to an additional charge of $30. For more information, refer to

This facility only takes residential solid waste. The following waste is not accepted at the Girdwood transfer station:
- Commercial waste,
- Refrigerators, washers, dryers and other cfc containing products,
- Large animals,
- Asbestos, demolition & land clearing debris,
- Asphalt,
- Liquids, grease, cooking oils,
- Medical waste, and
- Empty drums over 30 gal.

Special Material Disposal
Refrigerator/Freezer Disposal at Anchorage Regional Landfill and Central Transfer Station
Please remove doors prior to disposal at the Anchorage Regional Landfill and Central Transfer Station. Appliances must be empty. $28.50 to remove refrigerant, plus $20 disposal fee. Please contact customer service SWCS@anchorageak.gov or call (907) 343-6250.
Wood Lots
Anchorage Regional Landfill
The Anchorage Regional Landfill, Wood Lot, is located at 15500 Eagle River Loop Road (off the Hiland Road exit off the Glenn Highway) and is operated by Solid Waste Services. The free disposal of wildfire mitigation brush clean up, ends on October 31. Lumber, pallets and other building materials are considered refuse and charged accordingly.
Central Wood Lot, E. 56th Ave.
The Central Wood lot is located at the Materials Recovery Facility off 56th Ave. East of the Cold Weather Shelter parking lot. The Central Wood Lot is open on Monday through Saturday, May 1 through October 31. Disposal fees apply.
