CBERRRSA is a RRSA (Rural Road Service Area) encompassing over 350 lane miles of roadway in the Chugiak, Birchwood, Eagle River areas. It was formed in 1985 after voters elected to unify the previously separate rural road service areas in the October 1984 Municipal Regular Election.
A Service Area Board of Supervisors, currently comprised of five representatives from local area community councils, advises and assists the Municipality on establishing the level and type of road services desired by service area residents.
Private contractors, which are scheduled and directed by Municipality of Anchorage (M.O.A.) personnel, provide the actual street maintenance services within the CBERRRSA. Contract plowing crews are dispatched to begin plowing main and collector routes shortly after a total accumulation of 2 inches or more of snow, and will continue until the snowfall has ceased. The remaining side streets will only be plowed after a total accumulation of 3-5 inches and will be completed within 24 hours of dispatching contract equipment.
As established by the CBERRRSA Road Board, the clearing of all driveway and mailbox snow berms is the sole responsibility of each property owner.
Summer work may consist of any combination of maintenance activities (such as pothole patching, brushing, sweeping and drainage work) and maintenance reduction activities (improving of road surface types using recycled asphalt, chip seal, pavement overlays, etc.) to improve road durability and extend the useful life of our roads.
