Wildfire Mitigation

HouseFire.png WildFire.png

The Municipality has many homes in the Urban/Wildland interface, where unoccupied land and human development intersect.

Proper wildfire mitigation could save your home and your life.

Make a plan and build a kit

Maintain the space around your home:

  • Clean roof of pine needles, leaves, branches regularly
  • Repair any loose or missing shingles or roof tiles
  • Maintain the space around the outside openings of chimney's or stovepipes
  • Maintain the mesh screening to attic vents and clean debris from vents
  • Repair damaged or loose window screens
  • Keep debris under decks to a minimum
  • Keep bushes and trees on property trimmed to keep fire from spreading between them
  • Remove branches from trees to a height of 15 feet
  • Properly store gasoline and mixed fuels in safety cans away from buildings
  • Store firewood and kindling material that burn easily away from buildings
  • Keep a garden hose connected to hose bib, except in the winter
  • Keep all roads and driveways at least 12 feet in width

Reduce potential fire starting hazards in and around your home:

  • Discard stove or fireplace ashes and charcoal briquettes after soaking them in a metal pail of water
  • Do not smoke in areas of dry leaves or grass, dispose smoking waste in a metal can filled with water or sand.
  • Clean dryer and bathroom exhaust vents
  • Never leave a fire in fireplace unattended
  • Make sure children cannot reach burning candles
  • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children
  • Turn off space heaters when sleeping and keep space heaters on tile floor when in use
