Municipal Addressing is the official regulatory authority on street addresses for the entire municipality. We create and maintain a collection of all existing, approved addresses and all private and public street names.

What we do:

  • Assign all new addresses for the entire municipality.
  • Research problem or questionable addresses.
  • Correct/change any necessary addresses.
  • Maintain list of all approved street names, including both private and public streets.
  • Approve all new proposed street names through platting process and private street development. Change street names, as necessary.
  • Encourage property owners to post their approved addresses.
  • Provide correct address information to other municipal, state and federal government agencies, utilities, private companies and citizens. (No property owner names are included with this information.)
  • Maintain the Official Address Map

Street Names

Municipal Addressing is the official regulatory authority on street names for the entire Municipality of Anchorage. Our Street Name Master List includes all known private and public streets. Want to now more about Private, Public and how to change a Street Name.

New Addresses

New addresses will be assigned to all new buildings through the building or land-use permit. Simply apply for the permit and your address will be created and entered into your permit file.

Address Changes

Nobody likes to have their address changed. However, in order to provide a consistent and logical application of addresses throughout the Municipality, a change is sometimes necessary. The goal is sequential and logical addresses, since proper addresses play such a critical role in emergency response. An ambulance or other emergency responder should not waste precious time trying to locate a non-conforming address.

Address Posting

Help emergency responders find your home quickly and easily. In an emergency, every second counts. The Anchorage Fire and Police Departments urge citizens to post their addresses clearly. Please consider the viewpoint of the driver of an emergency vehicle such as a fire engine or an ambulance. Would the driver be able to read your home address numbers - perhaps in the dark, in the wintertime - all while approaching quickly?
