Anchorage, AK – Today, Mayor Dave Bronson announced that Municipal offices will be closed to the public on Monday, June 19th, 2023, in observance of Juneteenth. Following Mayor Bronson's support and a unanimous vote by the Assembly, the Municipality of Anchorage codified Juneteenth as an official holiday on February 21, 2023.
The following Municipal offices will be closed on the holiday: City Hall, Anchorage Public Libraries, the Permit Center at 4700 Elmore Road, Anchorage Health Department, AWWU's customer service, and APD's front counter.
Operations for emergency services like police and fire will continue as normal. Public transportation via PeopleMover, AnchorRIDES, and RideShare will remain open. Additionally, the Central Transfer Station, Anchorage Regional Landfill, and Animal Care and Control will stay open on the holiday.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, recognizing June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were free in accordance with President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
