Anchorage, AK — Today, Mayor Dave Bronson expressed his strong support for the draft Fish and Wildlife Program of the Eklutna Hydroelectric Project, emphasizing the importance of the Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility (AWWU) Portal Valve alternative in safeguarding Eklutna Lake, the municipality's primary source of clean water.

In his letter to the Eklutna Hydroelectric Project Owners, Mayor Bronson highlighted the critical role of Eklutna Lake in providing clean water to Anchorage. He commended the Owners for their collaborative efforts with AWWU, ensuring the protection of drinking water throughout the alternative evaluation process. Mayor Bronson believes that the draft Fish and Wildlife Program, with its focus on infrastructure improvements and viable solutions, will enhance protections for AWWU and improve drinking water safety for all residents.

The mayor also underscored the significance of the Eklutna Hydro Dam to energy security in southcentral Alaska. He noted its pivotal role during a recent cold snap, where adjustments in operations contributed to increased hydroelectric generation, preserving natural gas for other consumers, and avoiding the need for less sustainable alternatives. Mayor Bronson stressed the importance of preserving and optimizing the reliable, green, and cost-effective energy supplied by the Eklutna Hydroelectric Project.

Commending the Hydro Owner's adherence to the 1991 Agreement process, Mayor Bronson acknowledged their coordination with stakeholders, including state and Federal agencies and the Native Village of Eklutna. He expressed confidence that the draft plan, subject to public comment and ongoing discussion, holds great promise and will continue to serve as a robust framework for the project's future.

Mayor Bronson concluded the letter by expressing his appreciation for the commitment of the Hydro Owners, the Native Village of Eklutna, AWWU, and various stakeholders involved in the process. “I look forward to reviewing the final version of the Fish and Wildlife Program and trust the decision of the governor," said Mayor Bronson.
