Anchorage, AK — Today, Mayor Bronson announced during a press conference that Anchorage Police Department Chief Michael Kerle will retire at the end of April after nearly three decades of dedicated service to the Anchorage community. In his place, Mayor Bronson proudly introduces Bianca Cross as the incoming Police Chief.

Mayor Bronson expressed heartfelt gratitude for Chief Kerle's commitment and exceptional leadership throughout his tenure. "Chief Kerle has been an outstanding leader and valuable asset to the Anchorage Police Department. His dedication to public safety and his tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on our community," said Mayor Bronson.

Chief Kerle, who began his journey in law enforcement as an APD recruit in 1996, ascended through the ranks with positions in the Patrol Division, Special Operations, Crime Suppression, and Deputy Chief before reaching the pinnacle of his career as Chief of Police. Under his leadership, significant strides were made in enhancing public safety initiatives, including the deployment of naloxone to combat opioid overdoses, expansion of the Mobile Intervention Teams to address mental health emergencies, and the implementation of body-worn cameras for officers.

Reflecting on Chief Kerle's contributions, Mayor Bronson highlighted the reduction in violent crime and increased drug interdictions achieved under his leadership, emphasizing their lasting positive impact on the community.

Appointed to the role of Police Chief with the departure of Chief Kerle is Bianca Cross, a seasoned law enforcement professional with over 26 years of experience. Police Chief-designee Cross, who has been serving as Captain over the Detective Division, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new position. Known for her outstanding leadership and compassionate approach to critical investigations, Chief-designee Cross is poised to continue the legacy of excellence established by her predecessor.

Mayor Bronson expressed utmost confidence in Chief-designee Cross, citing her accolades, including the 2020 Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police Officer of the Year and the 2018 Anchorage Police Department Leadership Award. Her commitment to community policing and her dedication to treating everyone with dignity and respect align perfectly with the values of APD.

In the coming weeks, Chief Kerle will work closely with Chief-designee Cross to ensure a smooth transition, culminating in Chief-designee Cross officially assuming command on April 30.
