January 24, 2022 (Anchorage) - To support Tongan-Alaskans whose family members have experienced destruction to their homes due to the Tonga Volcano Eruption and Tsunami, leaving thousands without food, water, and shelter, Governor Mike Dunleavy and Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson are asking Alaskans to join in efforts to help.
“After every major disaster volunteers and charitable organizations play a critical role. We understand people want to help, and their help is needed," said Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy.
“I am thankful for the statewide efforts to assist our Tongan residents help their family members in need," said Mayor Bronson. “This is what being an Alaskan is all about."
Community members can help by dropping off select items or by making an online donation at Polynesian Association of Alaska
Requested items include:
- Financial assistance Polynesian Association of Alaska
- Financial assistance for Satellite phones ($1,778 per unit, 8 units are available for purchase)
- Flour
- Granulated Sugar
- AA batteries or bigger
- Flash lights
- Portable camping tents
Donated items can be dropped off at the following location from 12PM-8PM on January 24th, January 25th, and January 26th:

The Polynesian Association of Alaska is spearheading efforts, along with the Governor's office and the Municipality of Anchorage to coordinate shipment of donations with Samaritan's Purse.
