Anchorage, AK — Today, Mayor Dave Bronson announced the establishment of a new library at the Historic Old City Hall, a building that has been an integral part of our city for over 80 years.
Thanks to the generosity of the Goetz Family, this historic landmark will once again be a vibrant center for learning and culture in downtown Anchorage. Janet Goetz, born in 1911, bequeathed $7.2 million dollars to the Anchorage Library Foundation with the expressed purpose of establishing a downtown library, showcasing her unparalleled passion for literature and community enrichment.
Through the Goetz Trust, approximately $12.5 million dollars have been secured for the establishment and maintenance of the downtown library. This partnership between the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) and the Anchorage Library Foundation (ALF) signifies a renewed commitment to the city's cultural and educational enrichment.
After extensive public outreach and collaboration with various stakeholders, it has been determined that the ideal location for the downtown library is within Historic Old City Hall, aligning perfectly with the Goetz bequest and fulfilling Janet Goetz's vision.
Acknowledging the importance of funding and community support, we are proud to announce that the Anchorage Library Foundation, in conjunction with the 2022 Alaska State Capital Budget, has secured a $2.5 million federal Coronavirus Grant (SOA Grant). This grant will cover the capital costs of refurbishing and outfitting a minimum of 2,000 square feet of Old City Hall for the Downtown Branch Library.
In addition, through the April 2023 Parks and Recreation Bond, $700,000 has been designated for redeveloping Peratrovich Park adjacent to Old City Hall, complementing the library project. These two projects supported by the community, marks a significant milestone in revitalizing downtown Anchorage.
The restoration of Old City Hall and the creation of the downtown library will not only preserve our historical roots but also provide a hub for learning, culture, and community engagement. This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to the continued growth and development of downtown Anchorage.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Goetz Foundation, the Municipality of Anchorage, and all the stakeholders involved for their dedication to this transformative project.
