About Us
Our Department promotes and ensures safe and efficient transportation and communications. Our responsibilities range from long-range transportation planning to the day-to-day operations of our traffic signals and street signs. We provide services that move people and goods on our roads and pedestrian systems.
We work hard to streamline the development process of the Transportation Improvement Program that funds the majority of the transportation infrastructure. We also focus on addressing neighborhood traffic concerns and operations that maximize public safety, as well as continue to provide expertise to ensure that public safety communications and electronic systems are fully functional for all Municipal agencies.

The Traffic Engineering Division encompasses several very important sections of the Traffic Department, including Safety, Signals, and Data sections, all of which play key roles in the development and maintenance of municipal roadways and the safety of both drivers and pedestrians within the Municipality of Anchorage.

In 2006, Anchorage received approximately $22 million in federal funds for highways, roads, trails and related improvements. The Transportation Planning Division staffs the Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions (AMATS) which is a coordinated planning process to set priorities for spending these funds. This division also prepares the community's Long Range Transportation Plan, which is a tool to implement the comprehensive plan.

The Communications Division is a vital part of city functionality. The division maintains the municipal 800 Mhz trunk radio system and all municipal portable/mobile radios. They also inspect and test the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) biomedical equipment and all municipal Life pak defibrillators.
The Administration Division is responsible for all administrative tasks, personnel, contracts, finance, and budget-related issues as well as maintaining and promoting the city's Adopt-A-Road and Special Activity Permit programs.
