I live in close proximity to Valley of the Moon park. I agree with the master plan's intent especially the adding of an official dog park, relocating the port-a-potty units & screen, and addressing the parking overflow on 17th. However I would like to see the plan optimized in 4 areas. First to make more use of the woods between 17th & 19th along C St to aid in combating illegal camping. Perhaps by providing dog park trails so that some dog use is moved from the flat ball field area which may end up a mud pit with increased use. Second optimize the shape of the Community Garden expansion to optimize / increase the buffer with 19th Ave / Aurora Dr. and again add trails for community use to which could help combat illegal camping in the area. Third, the plan should increase trash respecticles and upgrade them to tamper proof units. There is frequently trash all over the area after heavy use days. Also animals and people are removing trash and leaving it on the ground where it is able to migrate into Chester Creek. Lastly, the plan should eliminate cooking at this park. There are frequent and un-permitted barbecues which result in hot coals, chicken bones and other dangerous food waste littering the area. At the very least proper hot coal rescepticles should be provided.

We are in favor of establishing a fenced in dog area at Valley of the Moon Park. This would only be the 2nd place in Anchorage where we can allow our dogs to run unleashed without worry of running off. Having a separate area for small/big dogs would be appreciated, but if costs are a concern we believe the current size of the ball field is adequate (and can be shared with various size dogs) but a solid fence and safe (double-gated) entrances are a must-have. An open area is nice to allow the dogs to run, chase balls. Adding an additional area in the forest with trails would be an extra benefit but not essential to our needs. Thank you for this opportunity to comment.
