January 12, 2004 Thank you for the opportunity to comment. I have not seen the plans for this landscaping project for the schools, so I don't have any detailed comments to submit. However, in general, I would like to see all current vegetation remain and additional vegetation include a majority of evergreen trees and shrubs, plus a watering/maintenance schedule included in the project to ensure long-term viability of the additional landscaping. Long winter months, with or without snow (as we are experiencing right now) clearly show how evergreens can enhance the beauty of landscaping efforts year-round. Deciduous shrubs are nice, but during the school year they add very little to the aesthetics of the campus and end up being little twigs poking out of the ground or completely buried in snow. They also tend to be higher maintenance than slow-growing evergreen shrubs, like mugo pines, and in these budget-retrained times, any landscaping plan should take that element into consideration. Evergreen trees should take priority over deciduous trees for the same reasons--they add to the year-round beauty of the campus, when kids, teachers, staff and the community spend the fall, winter and "spring" months on campus. They also require less maintenance (pruning) than deciduous trees. A majority of evergreen trees, accented with a few deciduous trees should make for a very nice, aesthetic, year-round landscaping environment for the community. Sincerely, Cathy L. Gleason a
