Traffic Signal Camera Footage Requests
The Traffic Engineering Department operates cameras mounted on traffic signal poles to support signal operations, safety analysis, and maintenance. These cameras are
tools for traffic management, not public surveillance.
Public Access
- No live public video: We do not provide public livestream access to traffic camera feeds.
- Alaska 511 stills: Selected camera still images are shared via
Alaska 511 to help travelers judge road and weather conditions in Anchorage.
How Long Footage Is Stored:
Each traffic signal camera temporarily stores video for about
3–5 days before it is automatically overwritten. During the 3-5 days window, footage can be downloaded from the camera before it is overwritten.
What We Can Release
We can only release video records in limited circumstances.
Many requests are handled by the Anchorage Police Department.
APD Case
If the incident involves a crime or there is an APD case number, the Anchorage Police Department (APD) handles all traffic signal footage. APD’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) has direct access to these cameras, responding officers or detective will request that RTCC download the appropriate footage and add it to the case's files.
To confirm whether footage has been downloaded, please contact your APD case officer or detective. To obtain the footage, make a request through APD's Records Center.

Crime Not Yet Reported
If a crime occurred but hasn’t been reported yet (stolen property, vandalism, hit-and-run), please file a police report.
Once APD opens a case, their team can download any available traffic signal footage.

Why Our Department Uses These Cameras
Traffic signal cameras help us understand how signals affect traffic flow and safety. They support signal timing, incident response, and maintenance planning so that the system operates safely and reliably for everyone. Our use of these cameras is defined by our department policy on traffic signal cameras. Our relationship with APD as it relates to traffic signal cameras is outlined in our 2025 Memorandum of Understanding.
