Vehicle Impounds​

The Vehicle Impounds desk is located within the Civil Division of the Municipal Attorney's Office. We can help release your vehicle if it was impounded by the Anchorage Police Department (APD) for one of the following reasons: 

​​​If your vehicle was impounded by APD for another reason, we will not be able to help. Please contact APD Records at 907-786-8600 or e-mail APD Impounds at APDImpounds@anchorageak.gov.


Vehicle Retrieval Information

​Timing and Online Vehicle Tracker

Our office typically receives​​​ vehicle impound information from APD by 1:00 pm the next business day after the impound. Please be patient; we are unable to help you until we receive this information. 

​E​​​xamples:​
  • If your vehicle was impounded on Monday afternoon, we can help you after 1:00 pm on Tuesday.
  • If your vehicle was impounded on Friday night, we can help you after 1:00 pm on Monday. 
Vehicles impounded through our offic​​e are physically loc​​​​​​ated at Vulcan Towing & Recovery. Vulcan has an online vehicle tracker that you can use to confirm that your vehicle is in their lot. Vehicles often appear in the tracker before we have them in our system. 



Instructions  
  • First, you must be a registered owner -Only a registered owner will be able to retrieve the vehicle. You must have documentation from the Department of Motor Vehicles reflecting you are the registered owner. Proof of ownership documents include a vehicle title or registration (in certain scenarios, an application might be accepted.)   
  • ​​Second, contact our office by phone, e-mail, or in-person - We will explain your options and municipal fees, then prepare the paperwork that allows the vehicle to be released. You are welcome to visit our office in-person, but an in-person visit is not necessary as long as you can e-mail us the documents. ​
  • Third, call Vulcan Towing at (907) 349-8697 to determine the amount of Vulcan's fees for towing and storage, and schedule an appointment to retrieve your vehicle. Appointments may also be scheduled online at https://www.vulcantows.com/impounds. All fees (municipal and Vulcan) must be paid in cash to Vulcan at your retrieval appointment. 
  • Fourth, at your appointment, be prepared to provide:
    • 1) the vehicle title and the vehicle'scurrent registration. If you do not have these documents, contact the DMV to obtain them. Vulcan may be able to reprint registrations for a fee.
    • 2) the ​vehicle license plate number or last six digits of the VIN
    • 3) current proof of insurance (physical or digital card) 
    • 4) the vehicle owner's government-issued photo I.D. 
    • 5) a valid driver's license for the individual who will be driving the vehicle home 

Bond Refunds

If your case has concluded and you need a refund of your bond, pleaseemailcivilimpounds@muni.org with the following:

    • 1) a copy of your court judgment
    • 2) the vehicle license plate number 
    • 3) your current mailing address and phone number
