AMATS is the acronym for Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions. Every metropolitan area with a population of more than 50,000 residents must have a designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for transportation in order to qualify for federal highway or transit assistance. AMATS is the MPO for the Anchorage Bowl and Chugiak-Eagle River areas when federal transportation funds are used.
AMATS Federal Certification Review
FHWA and FTA are jointly conducting a review of the federal transportation planning process in accordance with the joint planning regulations contained in 23 CFR 450.334.
You are invited to offer comments to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) as part of its certification of the metropolitan planning process.
The major elements of the review include: the organization and management of the planning process, planning agreements and the cooperative process, the transportation planning factors, public involvement, congestion management, project selection/project monitoring, financial constraint, environmental justice, Title VI integration with the planning process, freight, air quality, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

Announcing the Release of the Spenard Corridor Plan-Public Review Draft and Upcoming Open House
What is the Spenard Corridor Plan?
The Spenard Corridor Plan is Anchorage's first transit oriented development plan that combines both land use planning and transportation planning. The Plan will serve as a tool to integrate the needs of the Spenard community and serve as the primary guide for future development and public improvements along the Spenard Road corridor planning area. The planning team welcomes your comments and feedback on the public review draft.
Draft Spenard Corridor Plan
- The Public Comment Period will end on the close of business day on Friday July, 19th 2019.
- Comments to the SCP Public Review Draft may be submitted directly to the project managers Thede Tobish, Joni Wilm, and to firstname.lastname@example.org.
