ANCHORAGE - The Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the Municipality of Anchorage partnered to expand Job Center services in Mountain View, with the goal of reducing unemployment and supporting continued neighborhood revitalization. State Job Center staff will offer regular courses on job training at the Mountain View Library, including courses on preparing résumés, practicing for interviews, and computer and financial literacy.

“Our goal is to help more Alaskans find employment and achieve financial self-sufficiency,” said Labor Commissioner Heidi Drygas. “With a 22% unemployment rate in the Mountain View community, compared to 5% in Anchorage, residents are in critical need of our services. It only makes sense to focus our efforts to put more Mountain View residents to work.”

“Mayor Berkowitz and Commissioner Heidi Drygas have listened to the requests of Mountain View residents for more job-readiness trainings and career resources available directly in the neighborhood. Ease of access to services and on-site trainings will help improve employment outcomes in our neighborhood, and help residents achieve the careers they want,” said Kirk Rose, director of the Anchorage Community Land Trust.

“We want to make sure everyone in Anchorage has access to training opportunities so they can get a good job and take care of their families,” said Mayor Ethan Berkowitz.

The expansion of Job Center services through the Mountain View Library reflects a collaborative effort with local nonprofits and other state agencies. Workshops will be publicized through the library and other community partners including the Anchorage Community Land Trust and the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation. Job Center courses in Mountain View will utilize existing staff and come at zero additional cost to the state of Alaska.

In response to budgetary pressures, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development has significantly reduced Job Center costs by co-locating Job Center services with local organizations across the State. While reducing costs through lease savings, the department has worked to expand its partnerships to enhance the effectiveness of the Job Center network.
