ANCHORAGE – On Winter Bike to Work Day, the Municipality of Anchorage is highlighting bike and pedestrian friendly construction projects planned for in 2017.

In 2013, Anchorage was designated a silver level Bike Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, based on its world-class trail system, the comprehensive 2010 Bike Plan, and flourishing bike culture.

This year, Mayor Berkowitz’s Vision Zero initiative – a project designed to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries – will also conduct a public information campaign, focusing on “Share the Road” messaging and education for road users across all modes of travel.  Additionally, Vision Zero Anchorage will conduct an inventory of existing conditions to highlight problem areas in terms of bike and pedestrian safety and make suggestions for improvement.  Anchorage’s transportation planning authority, AMATS, is also finalizing a Complete Streets policy to govern project planning and engineering standards, and, in 2017, will also update the Bicycle Plan in a combined Bike, Pedestrian, and Trails Plan that will assess the network as a whole and make suggestions for expansion and connectivity.

“It is wonderful to live in a city with an active and long-term commitment to making our roadways safer for bicyclists, and all users,” said Lindsey Hajduk of Bike Anchorage.
