ANCHORAGE – Mayor Ethan Berkowitz will help open the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Convention this morning with welcoming remarks at 9 am.

“It is an honor to once again host our good friends from across Alaska,” said Mayor Berkowitz.  “The Convention is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the strength our city and state receives from Alaska Native peoples, tribes and corporations.”

On Monday, Mayor Berkowitz kicked-off the Elders and Youth Conference by naming every second Monday in October “Indigenous People’s Day” in Anchorage.

The Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) provides both direct support to the AFN Convention and through partnerships with Visit Anchorage, Anchorage Community Development Association (ACDA), and the Anchorage Downtown Partnership (ADP).

This year MOA’s Department of Health and Human Services will roll-out their new ‘Wellness on Wheels’ mobile unit to provide basic screening and check-up health services in the City Hall parking lot.  ACDA will offer free parking validation for all downtown EasyPark garages to convention attendees.  The MOA also supplies complimentary bus service to all AFN delegates.

“Our role is to connect AFN with businesses and services that can support the convention and its attendees. We realize people are here to not only attend the convention, but to go shopping, schedule medical appointments, and enjoy local restaurants, the arts, and time with friends. Our members help make this happen,” stated President and CEO of Visit Anchorage Julie Saupe.
