ANCHORAGE – The Anchorage School District and Municipality of Anchorage have expanded the services shared between organizations to create operational efficiencies. The additional shared services are in facility and fleet maintenance to reduce labor costs and overhead on needed parts and materials.
“Shared services save taxpayer dollars and create areas of expertise that lead to more efficient delivery of services,” stated Mayor Ethan Berkowitz.
ASD and the Municipality’s Solid Waste Services recently entered into an agreement for facility maintenance. ASD employees will provide preventative maintenance and support to the municipal SWS facility.
The Municipality will assume maintenance work for ASD’s heavy equipment fleet. The Municipality will cover labor costs for its employees and ASD will pay for parts and materials.
ASD and the Municipality also recently merged workers compensation adjustment systems. ASD’s workers compensation software system was developed in the 1970s and in need of replacement. This shared services agreement means ASD no longer needs to purchase a new system, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars. Additionally, both the Municipality and District’s Risk Management staffs will support each other during times of heavy workload in order to prevent a lag in response time.
“The Anchorage School Board placed a priority on finding ways to share services as part of the District’s Destination 2020 efficiencies goal. These agreements will bring value to our community through improved service at an overall reduced cost to taxpayers,” said Dr. Deena Bishop, ASD Superintendent. “Shared services will allow staff at both organizations to focus on their areas of expertise while eliminating inefficiencies within their respective organizations.”
The District and Municipality will continue to collaborate and increase efficiencies.
