ANCHORAGE – Yesterday, Mayor Ethan Berkowitz and Anchorage Community Development Authority Executive Director Andrew Halcro presented safety and design improvements for the Downtown Transit Center (DTC) and discussed long-term enhancements to the DTC that will continue efforts to increase public safety and revitalize downtown Anchorage.

“The Downtown Transit Center is a prime piece of property. It should be a safe, secure place for residents who use it and its character should positively contribute to downtown development,” stated Mayor Berkowitz.

Led by former Mayors Knowles and Mystrom, the Anchorage Downtown Partnership submitted a downtown transition report to Mayor Berkowitz placing increased security and safety at the transit center as their number one goal. In the past two months, ACDA worked at the transit center to improve security monitoring, adjusted hours of operation, and installed a new façade and exterior benches.

“A safe, secure, and vibrant downtown benefits all of Anchorage. I am proud to work with the Mayor and the ACDA board, pursuing a transit center that evolves to thrive, rather than exists to survive,” said Executive Director Halcro.

Efforts at the DTC compliment Mayor Berkowitz’s commitment to improving public safety and attracting investment to downtown Anchorage. This summer the Municipality improved visibility at Town Square Park, repaired downtown sidewalks, and partnered with Visit Anchorage to develop a downtown banner program.
