2040 Land Use Plan for the Anchorage Bowl

Mayor's Corner

9/20/2016

Anchorage - Municipal Planners say Anchorage will continue to grow, despite current economic conditions.  The purpose of the Anchorage 2040 Land Use Plan is to guide land uses over the next 25 years to accommodate a forecast of 44,000 more people, or 21,000 more households, living in the Anchorage Bowl by the year 2040, based on a low 1% per year.

The first Public Hearing on the revised draft plan is October 17 before the Planning and Zoning Commission.  Municipal Planners invite you to prepare for the Public Hearing by joining them at one of these upcoming meetings:

  • Wednesday, September 21, Federation of Community Councils, 6 p.m. at the Community Council Center, 1057 W Fireweed Lane
  • Monday, September 26, Anchorage Senior Center, 4 to 6 pm. 1300 E. 19th Avenue
  • Wednesday, September 28, Spenard Recreation Center, 4 to 6 pm, 2020 W 48th Avenue.

The Long Range Planning Department began releasing sections of the Public Hearing Draft of the Anchorage 2040 Land Use Plan Friday, September 16.  The entire draft will be available online by September 24 at this link:

This latest draft has taken into account a huge amount of public comment, according to Project Manager, Tom Davis.  Davis says the Planning Department has incorporated over 500 pages of public comments received from 18 of the 34 Community Councils, individuals and agencies, and meeting notes from consultations with a total of 76 agencies, Community councils, and individual residents of Anchorage.

Planners say the community’s input has been critical to the plan, and hope citizens will continue to participate in this process, to make the best land use plan possible to guide growth in the Anchorage Bowl through 2040.
