Rewarding Careers with AFD!

FIREFIGHTER

Under the direction of the Fire Captain, firefighters provide fire, rescue, and emergency medical care services. Firefighters prevent, combat, and extinguish fires. They provide rescue services, perform apparatus and station maintenance duties, and standby for for emergency response. Additionally, all firefighters are trained as an emergency medical technician in the academy where they learn to examine, treat, care for, and transport sick and injured patients. They perform other related duties as assigned or required.

DISPATCHER

A career in public safety telecommunications can be as rewarding as it is demanding. Successful candidates for the position will be quick-thinkers with the ability to multi-task and remain calm in high pressure situations. All telecommunicators with the Anchorage Fire Department take part in an intensive training program that involves classroom, text book and on-the-job training, generally lasting 4-12 months, depending on previous experience. Telecommunicators will become members of the International Association of Firefighters Union Local 1264.

MENTAL HEALTH CLINICIAN

The mental health clinician position falls under the Mobile Integrated Health Program's Mobile Crisis Team (MCT) and potentially involves working in the CORE (Community Outreach, Referral, and Education) program. This position provides in-field support helping individuals experiencing mental health crises, substance use concerns, and complex situations. Clinicians provide crisis intervention, assessment, de-escalation, and connection to appropriate community resources. This is hands-on, community-based work where you can make a meaningful impact every shift.

The AFD MCT provides an integrated behavioral health response to individuals experiencing behavioral health crises across the Municipality of Anchorage. The team follows the Crisis Now framework and SAMHSA best-practice standards, pairing a licensed mental health clinician with a paramedic or EMT to deliver timely, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care. The program prioritizes stabilization, risk assessment, and connection to appropriate services, allowing most crises to be resolved safely in the community rather than in emergency departments or through law enforcement involvement.
