Last night, the Anchorage Assembly approved Alaska Hydro Ax Land Clearing to perform critical wildfire fuel mitigation work along a 3.1 mile stretch of Campbell Airstrip Road from AFD Fire Station 14 to Basher Drive Trailhead. The work creates a 300-foot-wide shaded fuel break (150 feet in both directions from the centerline of the road). The project involves the removal of dead and downed trees, thinning spruce and hardwood stands and reducing ladder fuels. The aim of the project is to reduce wildfire risk and enhance public safety: Campbell Airstrip Road serves as a single access route for firefighters and a critical egress route for the public, making hazardous fuel reduction essential for safe evacuation during a wildfire.
“This fuel break along Campbell Airstrip Road is critical for the life safety of both the Stuckagain Heights community and first responders," said Wildfire Division Chief Jon Glover. “As the only evacuation route for residents and the sole access point for emergency crews, maintaining safe egress is essential to ensuring people can escape and firefighters can respond effectively during a wildfire."
The project is expected to be completed within a six-month timeframe that accounts for seasonal weather conditions and accessibility. Special care will be taken in sensitive areas to minimize environmental impact. All debris will be mulched or chipped on site. Useable firewood will be made available for public collection; safe pick-up areas will be established as work is performed. The public is encouraged to stay out of work areas.
