What is Language Access?
In the U.S., “Language Access” is a federally mandated requirement for publicly funded services based on Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination based on national origin. Language Access policies are meant to provide services, information and opportunities in a person’s preferred language or mode of communication, particularly for Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals and those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
What is Anchorage doing to support Language Access?
With the enactment of MOA Language Access Policy & Procedure 16-6 in 2018, it has been the policy of the Municipality of Anchorage to provide meaningful access to Municipal services, programs and activities for everyone who lives and visits Anchorage. By providing language access services, the Municipality of Anchorage also seeks to create opportunities for all individuals who want to participate in our economy, community and city government so our city can thrive.
