Members Launch Task Force to Reimagine Public Safety Advisory Commission

6/23/2025

A temporary community task force will begin meeting this Thursday, June 26, to evaluate whether Anchorage should revive and redesign its former Public Safety Advisory Commission, which advised the Municipality on public safety policies and practices.

The task force was created by the Anchorage Assembly through AR 2025-111, a resolution sponsored by Assembly Vice Chair Anna Brawley and Assembly Members Kameron Perez-Verdia and Felix Rivera. The task force will bring together stakeholders to explore the community's role in public safety, consider community engagement strategies, and issue recommendations on replacing the former commission.

Task force members are currently being selected and will represent a wide range of groups, as outlined in AR 2025-111, to include municipal departments, law enforcement, the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association, the Anchorage School District, community organizations, and other key voices in public safety. Denali Daniels + Associates, an independent contractor, will provide facilitation services to support the group’s work. All meetings will be open to the public, with advance notice provided.

The first meeting will take place on June 26, 2025, from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. in the Moose Room at the Z.J. Loussac Library and virtually, with additional meetings to follow. Community members are encouraged to attend and share input.

“We’re approaching this effort with open minds and a shared commitment to strengthening the connection between public safety and community voices,” said Assembly Member Felix Rivera, who will convene the task force alongside a community partner. “We hope to see meaningful participation from the public throughout this process – it’s essential that the community helps shape the future of public safety in Anchorage.”
