MOA Elections Announces Ballot Processing Status Update

4/8/2024

Today, Acting Elections Administrator William Northrop and Municipal Clerk Jamie Heinz announced a status update of ballot processing for the 2024 Regular Municipal Election.

As of today, Friday, April 5, 2024, nearly all ballots received by Election Night from secure dropboxes and Anchorage Vote Centers have been fully processed. All ballots voted by Election Day and received by mail through today have been processed. Unofficial election results reflecting all ballots fully processed to date will be tabulated this evening and published on the MOA Elections website by 6:00 p.m.

Ballots Received
As of today, 72,589 ballot return packages have been received at the MOA Election Center. Ballot return packages received at the MOA Election Center are counted upon receipt. Daily totals for the number of ballots received by mail, dropbox and Anchorage Vote Center (AVC) are published on the MOA Elections website: Elections Ballot Return Data (muni.org). Today's update will be published by 6:00 p.m. tonight.

Ballots Processed
As of today, the MOA Elections Team has completed sorting and verifying all ballots received from secure dropboxes and AVCs on Election Day. Ballot processing will continue as return packages sent on or before Election Day arrive at the MOA Election Center. Beginning next week, in addition to ballot return packages coming in by mail, the team will process ballots from electronic voting, questioned ballots, and ballots that have been cured by voters.

Unofficial Election Results
Unofficial election results are published on the MOA Elections website: Elections Results and Data (muni.org). This evening's results will include ballots that have been verified, opened, and scanned through today. The next set of results will be posted on Monday, April 8 before 5:00 p.m.

Runoff Election Likely
Per Anchorage Charter Section 11.02b, the Mayor must be elected by 45% of the electorate, plus one. Seeing as no candidates will reach the benchmark established in Charter, a runoff mayoral election is likely.

The Anchorage Assembly is scheduled to certify election results at their Regular Assembly Meeting on April 23. If the results are certified, a runoff mayoral election will be noticed on April 28. In the likely event of a runoff mayoral election, dates and deadlines will be as follows:

  • Sunday, April 14 – Deadline to Register or Update Voter Registrations for the Runoff Mayoral Election
  • Tuesday, April 30 – Runoff Mayoral Election Ballot Packages Mailed
  • Tuesday, May 7 – AVCs Open for Runoff Mayoral Election
  • Tuesday, May 14 – Runoff Mayoral Election Day

Reminder to Register to Vote
MOA Elections reminds voters who have recently moved to ensure they update their voter registration by Sunday, April 14 to be qualified to vote in the Mayoral Runoff Election.
