During the April 22nd Regular Assembly Meeting, the Anchorage Assembly unanimously approved first quarter revisions to the 2025 operating and capital budgets.
“This budget represents good government,” said
Former Assembly Vice Chair Meg Zaletel during the debate. In her role as Co-Chair of the Assembly Budget and Finance Committee, Zaletel stewarded the Assembly's budget process for the past several years. “For the first time in years, we aren’t talking about vacancy factors, which is a good sign for all of us that the Municipality is staffed up and getting to work.”
In addition to the Administration’s proposed budget, the Assembly adopted two amendments:
- An approved amendment sponsored by Assembly Members Anna Brawley, Kameron Perez-Verdia and Felix Rivera directs $30,000 to fund a task force to reimagine the Public Safety Commission. The Assembly approved AR 2025-111, As Amended, a resolution establishing the task force, on April 8, 2025.
- An approved amendment sponsored by Former Assembly Member Karen Bronga splits $75,000 between the Anchorage Health Department and Anchorage Police Department for violence prevention programming in Anchorage public schools. The Assembly approved AR 2025-116(S-1), As Amended, a resolution supporting equitable, community-based and proven solutions, at their April 16 special meeting.
Current Assembly Vice Chair Anna Brawley, who served as Co-Chair of the Assembly Budget & Finance Committee alongside Former Member Zaletel, added, “I’m proud to say the Assembly has maintained our track record for approving a balanced budget on time and under the tax cap that will deliver essential public services to our community.”
The first quarter budget revision cycle is an opportunity to see the final projections of the previous year’s revenue and expenses and make adjustments to the current year budget as needed, because the annual budget is based on projections from the previous fall.
