Anchorage Vote Centers to Offer Secure, ADA-Accessible Voting Machines

3/21/2024

Recognizing the rights of all registered, qualified voters to vote in Municipal Elections, the MOA Elections Team announced today that Anchorage Vote Centers (AVCs) will offer ADA-accessible voting machines in the 2024 Regular Municipal Election.

The new voting machines are secure touchscreens with built-in accommodations most often used by people with visual and/or mobility impairments. For example, the machine can read a ballot to a person with visual impairments or accommodate sip-and-puff navigation for a person with physical limitations. The air-gapped system is locked until activated by an election official, who uses two-factor authentication to open the voting session.

Private and Secure Voting Accommodations

The MOA Elections team designed security protocol to ensure the integrity of secure and private accommodations. The accessible voting machines will not be connected to the Internet and will not be used to transmit votes.

How to Access Accommodations

Registered voters may visit an AVC during posted hours and request accommodations from an election official. The election official will use two-factor authentication to open a voting session on the accessible voting machine and then leave the voter to complete their ballot independently and privately.

After the voting session is complete, the voter prints their ballot, then folds and inserts the paper ballot into their ballot return envelope and into the ballot box.
