Seismic Hazards
In 1979 the Municipality commissioned a study of geotechnical hazards in Anchorage. The study defined five seismic hazard zones:
- Zone 1 (lowest ground failure susceptibility)
- Zone 2 (moderately low ground failure susceptibility)
- Zone 3 (moderate ground failure susceptibility)
- Zone 4 (high ground failure susceptibility)
- Zone 5 (very high ground failure susceptibility)
Structures in zones 4 and 5 require foundations certified by a registered engineer.
The seismic hazard map can be reviewed at the Planning Department, Building Safety, or Land Use Enforcement -- all at 4700 South Bragaw. The map is also included in the Anchorage Coastal Resource Atlas, which can be reviewed at the Planning Department or the Z. J. Loussac library. The atlas also maps mass wasting potential and other geophysical characteristics that may be of interest.
As a result of the 1964 earthquake, special requirements have been placed on subdivisions and building permits in the Turnagain Slide area near Earthquake Park. These requirements are found in AO 78-84. This ordinance is available from the Planning Department, the Municipal Clerk's office, or Land Use Enforcement.
