Floodplains

Flood hazard districts are established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA.)  Building construction, fill, and other activities within the floodway or floodway fringe areas are regulated by section 21.60 of the municipal code.

Development in the flood hazard district requires a flood hazard permit.  Click here for the application.  The Project Management and Engineering Department also has more information on its website.

The official flood hazard boundary maps may be reviewed at the Permit Center (4700 South Bragaw.)  Floodplains are also shown (unofficially) on the zoning maps.  They are also mapped in the Anchorage Coastal Resource Atlas, which may be reviewed at the Planning Department or the Z. J. Loussac library.

If you use the online version of the code (under "External Links), try searching on "21.60.005" for more information.  Please note that recent amendments may not have been published yet.  Land Use Enforcement will be happy to verify the current code language for you.
