Rules of the Road (simplified)
thanks to Bike Commuters Alliance of Anchorage www.anchoragebicyclealliance.org
- Bicyles are granted and must follow the rights and responsibilities of the road
- Bicycles on sidewalks or trails have the same rights and duties as pedestrians
- On a sidewalk or trail bicycles should give an audible signal by voice or by bell before overtaking and passing
- Ride as far right on the road as possible, unless unsafe to do so
- Bikes can occupy one traffic lane while waiting to cross an intersection, or turn left in order to increase your visibility to drivers (in many cities bicyclists line up beside each other)
- Bikes are not allowed on sidewalks (5' wide) in business districts - so in dowtown and midtown yield and prepare to walk
- All children 15 and under are required to wear helmets - (hey if you want to keep your brain intact you really should wear one)
