The Anchorage Bike Plan will focus on identifying and improving a system of commuter routes for cyclists so they can safely arrive at their destinations

  • Development of the Draft Bicycle Network

The Anchorage Bicycle Plan project team and the Bike Focus Group   have been hard at work over the winter , sifting through your comments from the October 2007 meetings to develop a Draft Bicycle Network for Anchorage

The Draft Bike Network was shown  at theProjects and Plans Fair on April 28.  You can also view it online.  Please provide any comments by Mid May.  We hope to have a Draft Bike Plan out for Public Review Later this summer.

Rules of the Road (simplified)

thanks to Bike Commuters Alliance of Anchorage www.anchoragebicyclealliance.org

- Bicyles are granted and must follow the rights and responsibilities of the road

- Bicycles on sidewalks or trails have the same rights and duties as pedestrians

- On a sidewalk or trail bicycles should give an audible signal by voice or by bell before overtaking and passing

- Ride as far right on the road as possible, unless unsafe to do so

- Bikes can occupy one traffic lane while waiting to cross an intersection, or turn left in order to increase your visibility to drivers (in many cities bicyclists line up beside each other)

- Bikes are not allowed on sidewalks (5' wide) in business districts - so in dowtown and midtown yield and prepare to walk

- All children 15 and under are required to wear helmets - (hey if you want to keep your brain intact you really should wear one)
