People Mover Rolls Out Its First Bus Wrap
Alternative advertising hopes to generate revenue for municipal bus system

People Mover will roll out its first advertising full-bus wrap on Saturday, September 16. The large and colorful underwater graphic depicts whales, seals, crabs, and salmon with the message “People Mover—A Whale of a Ride.” The graphic bus wrap, sponsored by 3M Alaska, will offer local companies a 40-foot, bus-sized message moving past thousands of local viewers each day.

“The full bus wrap is an alternative form of advertising, which People Mover plans to offer on up to five buses to increase revenue for the department,”  explained Jody Karcz, Director of Public Transportation.

The People Mover staff developed the “Whale of a Ride” concept and the five-sided wrap was designed, printed and installed locally by GraphicWorks, Inc.

  “With cutbacks in government spending, alternative advertising using municipal buses can help bridge the gap,” explained Nancy Killoran, People Mover Marketing Manager. “Money generated from bus advertising is used to maintain and expand a high standard of service for riders. Full-wrap bus advertising is not new. Transit operations across the country offer advertising on buses to help off-set operational costs.”

In the mid 1990s People Mover offered painted buses in the 1990s as an advertising venue. Currently the People Mover sells advertising space on its busses as small panels. Wrapping a bus targets a larger market for advertising at a local and national level.

People Mover maintains a fleet of 55 modern, comfortable, fully accessible and clean buses that travel over two million miles a year. Each day more than 14,000 Anchorage and Eagle River commuters ride People Mover buses, and the bus fleet is viewed by many of the drivers who account for the million vehicle trips* made each day on Anchorage roads.
