AnchorRIDES ELIGIBILITY
Are you eligible for AnchorRIDES?
There are three major programs that fund trips for AnchorRIDES service. A person needs to qualify for at least one of the programs in order to be eligible for AnchorRIDES service.
Senior Citizens Eligibility
When you arrive at the golden age of sixty (60) years old, or are the spouse of a sixty year old, you're considered an eligible senior citizen for curb-to-curb trips. An enrollment form is required to provide safe and appropriate transportation service and to obtain statistical information required for our grants from the State of Alaska, Division of Senior and Disability Services, and the Federal Transit Administration.
After the completed enrollment form is received, we will enter the information into our computerized scheduling system. A letter of eligibility and program information will be mailed.
Choice Medicaid Home and Community Based Waiver Eligibility
If you are a recipient of the Medicaid Home and Community Based Waiver Program and interested in having AnchorRIDES as a service provider, contact your Care Coordinator. The Care Coordinator can contact us at 562-8444 and ask for the Medicaid Waiver Specialist. An enrollment form and authorized plan of care will need to be received before services can begin.
ADA Eligibility for People with Disabilities
To qualify for AnchorRIDES, a person must be unable to use People Mover buses for some or all of your transportation needs and have a disability that fits one of the following ADA criteria. Please note that the entire People Mover bus fleet is equipped with fully accessible buses.
-
Any individual with a disability who is unable, as the result of a physical or mental impairment, and without the assistance of another individual to board, ride or disembark from any vehicle on the system which is readily accessible to, and usable by individuals with disabilities. Persons that cannot navigate the bus system due to mental or visual impairments fit in this criterion.
-
Any individual with a disability who has a specific impairment-related condition that prevents them from traveling to a boarding location or from a disembarking location on the fixed route system. Conditions such as weather, distance and terrain do not automatically confer eligibility. However, if travel to and from a boarding location is impossible when combined with a specific impairment-related condition, paratransit services must be provided.
-
Persons with temporary disabilities may be eligible for temporary AnchorRIDES service, and seasonal eligibility may be determined for persons who have trouble only during certain times of the year.
-
Visitors to Anchorage are eligible to use AnchorRIDES service for up to 21 days if they have an ADA paratransit eligible identification card from another city or verification of disabling conditions that fit the eligibility criteria.
Information about AnchorRIDES is available in large print, Braille, CD or audiocassette. Contact the AnchorRIDES Office at 343-7433 and request the materials in your preferred format. With advance notice, sign language interpreters can be available at any Municipality of Anchorage meeting or public hearing.
Eligibility Appeals
If denied AnchorRIDES eligibility, applicants may appeal the decision. There is a 60 days grace period after a denial notification to file a written appeal with the Public Transportation Department. A hearing will be scheduled with the AnchorRIDES Appeal Committee within 30 days after receipt of an eligibility appeal request. The AnchorRIDES Appeal Committee will meet with the denied applicant and review any medical documents submitted. If a decision has not been reached 30 days after the hearing, the applicant will be eligible for AnchorRIDES from that time until the appeal decision is made.
