What is Car Pooling?

Car pooling is when two or more commuters ride together in a private vehicle at least three days per week and share the cost. Car pooling is the simplest and most common ridesharing arrangement.

It's Easy and Economical

Anchorage Share-A-Ride  provides a free ridematching service for commuters. Participants are matched by home and work locations and by working hours. They receive a list of others going their way at their times. Participants then contact those on the list to make arrangements. Pooling can save thousands of dollars a year on gas, car maintenance and reduces the wear and tear on your vehicle. See driving cost calculator

How It Works

There are three ways to car pool—drive, share the driving and ride-only. Some drivers prefer to drive daily and charge a set fee. Other poolers share driving-- each person alternates days or weeks of driving (no money exchanges). Some poolers prefer to ride only and pay a set fee. Decisions on how a car pool operates are governed by the individuals in that car pool. When forming the car pool, be sure to discuss the method of car  pooling, cost (if any), specific times and emergency plans. See carpooling tips.
