About Public Transportation

Our mission is to meet the public transportation needs of all Anchorage residents and visitors.
Sanctioned by local voters in 1973, Anchorage's Public Transportation People Mover bus system began operation on July 1, 1974, carrying 39,505 passengers in the first month of service. In 2005 it made 3,975,074 trips with an average weekday ridership of 13,498.
People Mover maintains a fleet of 55 modern, comfortable, fully accessible and clean buses that travel over two million miles a year. Friendly, courteous and professional bus operators serve the greater Anchorage area with 15 regular transit routes and 4 DART routes. More than 12,000 Anchorage and Eagle River commuters ride People Mover buses every day.
The department offers a number of transportation programs to improve mobility and access to our community including:
-
AnchorRIDES, a complementary shared ride service for seniors and people whose disabilities prevent them from using the fixed route (People Mover);
-
Share-A-Ride which coordinates commuter Vanpools and offers free carpool matching services,and
-
Free Travel Training to groups and individuals riding on the bus.
