INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Dear New Volunteer:

Thank you for your interest in the Trail Watch program.  By becoming a Trail Watch volunteer you can make your favorite Anchorage trail safer by staying alert for suspicious activities or dangerous conditions.   As a new volunteer, you probably have some questions.  Please review the information below.  If you still have questions, visit the Trail Watch website for more information.

Volunteering is Simple
Trail Watch was designed to be a user-friendly program – you can spend as much time volunteering as your schedule and your interest allows.  You’ve taken the first step by turning in your application.  There are just a few more things you need to do to become a Trail Watch volunteer:

Watch the Trail Watch orientation video.  This 20 minute video is shown at 11:30 am, 5:30 pm and 11:30 pm on Channel 10 and is also available for check-out from the Loussac Library.

Pick up your Trail Watch welcome packet.  This packet includes volunteer information and a Trail Watch armband.  Packets can be picked up at:

Office of Parks and Recreation
2:00-4:00pm
 (Tuesday's)
120 S. Bragaw (next to Clark Middle School)

Kincaid Chalet
 2:00-8:00pm everyday

Wear your armband whenever you use the trail.

Report any suspicious activities or trail hazards.  Specific information for reporting incidents will be included in your Trail Watch welcome packet.

Trail Watch Ambassadors should contact John McCleary of Anchorage Parks and Recreation at mccleaji@ci.anchorage.ak.us in order to be assigned to the Trail Watch Ambassador schedule.  Trail Watchers do NOT have to commit to a schedule and are free to volunteer at their own discretion.

Your Presence Makes the Trails Safer
Even if you NEVER report a complaint or concern, your visible presence on the trail system can make a big impact!  Trail users already report that they feel safer on the trails as a result of seeing Trail Watch volunteers wearing the distinctive Trail Watch armband.

Volunteers Make an Impact!
Trail Watch volunteers have reported hazardous trail conditions to authorities, have assisted injured persons, have reported crimes, have given directions to lost visitors and have helped assisted with “bike-breakdowns” on the trail.

Reports Online
Trail Watch volunteers can log on to this website (see link to your right) to provide an account of their experience on the trail and report any safety issues or suspicious activities.  These   volunteer observations are catalogued on the TRAIL REPORTS section.  Volunteers are encouraged to submit reports frequently – visit the website and see what your fellow volunteers have to say.  Check it out!

High Fives
Please make sure that you greet other Trail Watch volunteers when you’re out on the trails.  Your community-minded spirit is something that you all have in common – make sure that to show other volunteers your support.   ALWAYS wear your armband or other Trail Watch gear when you are out on the trails.

Thank you for your continued support! For more information call John @ 343-4296.
