Food waste currently cannot be composted commercially but residents with yard space can include some food waste in backyard composting bins or piles. Do not include meats, fish, or dairy products and do not compost food wastes in areas where bears are common as the food may attract the bears. An alternative to back yard composting is vermicomposting a.k.a. worm composting. This is usually done in a container with ‘red wiggler’ worms and the container can be kept in a protected location such as a shed or garage.
Glass
As of January 5, 2009, glass bottles and jars will not be collected for recycling. This is a temporary situation and this web page will have updated information when glass collection is reinstated. All three glass drop-off containers at the Anchorage Recycling Center off Dowling Road (Smurfit-Stone Recycling), the Anchorage Regional Landfill and at Brown Jug Warehouse on Old Seward will be removed on January 5.
