The Hazardous Waste Collection Center (HWCC) is located at the
Anchorage Regional Landfill  (ARL), at the intersection of the Glenn Highway and Hiland road, near the community of Eagle River, Alaska.  Take Glenn Highway to Hiland Road exit.  Turn West on Hiland, and follow the signs into the Landfill.

This facility accepts hazardous wastes from households and businesses.  Businesses must qualify as a Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators or CESQG’s.  CESQG’s are companies that generate less than 220 pounds of any hazardous wastes per month.  Disposal rates for CESQG’s vary by product and quantity. Typical CESQG rates range between $.50 to $1.00 per pound.  Drop off your hazardous household materials including: paint, gasoline, batteries, fertilizers, cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, oil, anti-freeze, and much more.  Drop-off services are FREE for households only (40 pounds or less limit).  A hazardous waste pick-up service is also available on a call-in basis.  Please call  (907) 428-1742 for further information.

Reuse Program
 Paint & Materials Exchange

While you’re at the ARL or CTS facilities, be sure to visit the Paint & Materials exchange. When the public drops off hazardous materials, we check them and put the usable products in the HazBin.  For example, on an average, we take in anywhere from  50-100 gallons of paints each week.  Sometimes good paint comes in unopened.  You might also be able to pick up some household cleaning solvents, auto fluids, or lawn and garden chemicals, depending on availability.

Used Oil - We have provisions for used oil collection at all of our facilities.  They are open the same hours as the
facilities where they are located.  The used motor oil is later refined; some of it goes for use in ship engines, or back into usable oil for autos.

Waste Types

  • Automotive
  • Pesticides
  • Paints, Solvents, Preservatives
  • Household Products
  • Photographic Chemicals
  • Art and Hobby Supplies
  • Explosives and Ammunition
  • Asbestos
  • Corrosives (Acids and Caustics)
  • Resins and Adhesives
  • Fluorescent Light Bulbs and Ballasts

Used Oil - Up to 5 gallons will be accepted at all SWS facilities. An additional 5 gallons will be accepted at CTS for an additional charge of $1.00 per gallon.  Used oil is also handled by individual contractors, consult the yellow pages under Oil Waste.  Do not mix used oil with antifreeze, solvents, or gasoline.
