whitby2 Whitby, England

Whitby, an ancient seaport on the east coast of England, is predominantly linked with Captain James Cook, one of the greatest surveyors, sailors and explorers of all time. Cook’s third voyage (1776-1780) resulted in the navigation of coastal Alaska.  Today identical statues stand in Whitby and Anchorage to commemorate his accomplishments.

Outside the town of Whitby is the RAF missile site, Flyindales, closely linked with the Clear, Alaska, missile site.

Whitby is a charming town with its narrow, winding streets, fishermen’s cottages, stretches of sea cliffs and harbors. High on the harbor’s east side are ruins of St. Hilda’s Abbey, founded in 657 A.D.

Whitby and Anchorage became sister cities in 1978, and though our connection is basically historical, we maintain cultural, educational and social communication.
