The Right-of-Way is a dedicated strip of land intended for the accommodation of traffic movements, utilities, drainage, and other similar public uses. During the winter season, the right-of-way behind the roadway is reserved for snow storage to expedite snow removal. This area may extend seven feet or more beyond the road edge. Landscaping in these areas is limited to topsoil and seeding only.
Rights-of-way vary in width, with most being 50 to 60 feet wide. There are several ways to locate the property line:

Have it surveyed by a registered surveyor. (This and method #2 are the most accurate).

Locate your property pins (corners) from the as-built survey (banks require this information for financing).

Come to 4700 South Bragaw to the Plats and Maps Section and obtain a copy of the 100-scale or plat of your property.

Call Plats and Maps at 343-8192 to find out how wide the ROW adjacent your property is.

Measure across the road from the back of curb to back of curb, or from edge of pavement to edge of pavement. Divide by two, and subtract the result from one half of the ROW width. As an example, the distance measured is 34 feet from the back of the curb across the street to the other back of curb. The ROW is 60 feet, so you can calculate as follows:
60'- 34'= 26'
26' / 2 = 13'
or
34' wide / 2 = 17'
the ROW = 60' , so 60 / 2 = 30'
30' - 17' = 13'
The property line is 13 feet behind the curb.
6. Measure one half the width of the ROW from
the centerline of the street.
7. Locate the AWWU water key box; it is usually
within one foot of the property line.
* Methods 1 and 2 are the most accurate methods of locating the edge of the right-of-way. All other methods are approximations because the physical road may not be built in the true center of the right-of-way.
To insure your fence, landscaping, or other project is not within the municipal right-of-way, you should verify the property line location.
