 SCOOP THE POOP

Anchorage is home to over 59,000 dogs who leave an average of ¾ pound of poop a day.  Parks and Recreation, the Anchorage Waterways Council, UAF Cooperative Extension, State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, the Bureau of Land Management, Anchorage Animal Control, and other interested groups belong to a Scoop-the-Poop Committee, charged with educating the public to clean up after their pets year round.

Signs to remind people to pick up after their pets are posted next to refuse stations with bags and trashcans in parks throughout Anchorage.  The signs, stations, bags and containers have all been donated, and they are available for purchase and placement within the parks. Credit card purchase is available. Special thanks to the Rasmuson Foundation for their recent purchases of bear-proof containers.

“Got Poop” posters raised awareness of refuse and water quality issues using humor.  Local celebrities Nina Kemppel, Dean Larson, an APD officer and a firefighter posed with their dogs for the “Got Poop” campaign in 2004.  Northwest Strategies designed the posters.  Posters are available at Parks and Recreation.
