The Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department provides community work service for individuals sentenced by the courts or the juvenile probation office to perform a number of hours of community service work. With the exception of juveniles on probation and citations issued by APD for smoking and curfew violations, participants in this program have been convicted of a misdemeanor offense and assigned work service hours as part of their sentence, in lieu of jail time or in lieu of a fine.

The Community Work Service Office works closely with the State of Alaska District and Traffic Court, the Municipal Prosecutor, the Anchorage District Attorney Office, the State of Alaska Juvenile Probation Office, and the Municipal Hearing Office for APD citations issued for curfew and smoking violations. It is a means of reducing incarceration costs and allowing misdemeanants to maintain their regular employment by performing court ordered community service hours. Participants are utilized to assist in special projects in municipal parks and to assist other municipal or non-profit agencies.

Goal of Community Work Service

  • Serve as a deterrent to crime.
  • Help reduce overcrowding and unnecessary expense to the jail system by providing an alternative to jail time above and beyond the minimum requirements established by law.
  • Allow participants to provide something of value, through in-kind services, to the community which they have offended.
  • Renew the public's faith in our judicial system by demonstrating efficient, and effective ways of both deterring crime and reducing judicial costs.
  • Provide services to the community at large which will improve the general environment and the quality of life for those within the Municipality.
