Parking Meters

Parking Meter Equipment Upgrade!

We are pleased to announce a comprehensive upgrade of single space, on-street metered parking devices.  We have purchased approximately 1,000 new, electronic meter mechanisms which are slated for installation downtown during late March and early April 2008.  These meter mechanisms will slip nicely inside existing meter-head housing and will replace all “mechanical” style meters which require a deposit of coin and a turn of the dial.  In addition, we have invested in handheld computer technology which will enable us to take a more proactive stance on fixing meter problems before they render the meter inoperable.

Metered Parking Overview

On-street metered parking is important to the health and vitality of our Central Business District.  In Anchorage, we strive to provide metered parking that suits varied need.  If you are a visitor to the CBD, we encourage you to use our metered parking to access our many fine shops, restaurants and hotels.  If you are a downtown worker, we encourage you to car-pool, ride-share, or use the People Mover.  If these options are not possible, we ask you to contact us to inquire about monthly parking permits in our lots, garages and dual-use areas.  Workers who use these permits are saving money and helping to keep the metered spaces open for short-term parkers.

The Anchorage Police Department provides parking enforcement for all on-street parking.  Typically the officers patrol on foot, using handheld computers.  If you return to your vehicle and find a citation, please follow the instructions on the backside of the citation.
