FEMA Independent Study Courses

The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) offers more than fifty independent study courses. These are self-paced courses designed for people who have emergency management responsibilities and the general public. For most of our courses you will need to download and print the materials. Others are interactive courses that you can take directly over the internet through the Independent Study Program.  All are offered free-of-charge to those who qualify for enrollment. Each Independent Study Course includes lessons with practice exercises and a final examination. Students who score 75 percent or better are issued a certificate of achievement from EMI.

Course completion times vary from two to fourteen hours, depending on the course and the student’s background. College credit can be obtained after successful completion of a course.

National Incident Management System/Incident Command Courses

National Incident Management System (NIMS)/Incident Command Courses (ICS) are available on-line through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. These courses are an interactive on-line programs and provide the participant with NIMS/ICS basic information. These courses are available through the FEMA Independent Study program noted above. 

The IS-700 National Incident Management System - An Introduction is the recommended starting point to gain a better understand NIMS/ICS.  Upon completion of the IS-700 there are several versions of the IS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System.  They include the general coursehealth care and hospitallaw enforcement, public works, and one for schools as well.  You only need too take one of the above courses before moving on to the IS-200 - ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents.   

The Department of Homeland Security and FEMA has replaced the National Response Plan with the the National Response Framework.  The IS-800b National Response Framework an Introduction, course has been released as an independent study course.  This course introduces participants to the concepts and principles of the National Response Framework.

Fire Extinguisher On-Line Training Course

Fire extinguishers are the first line of defense when a fire occurs in the home, office, or in your vehicle while traveling. Learn on-line how to choose the appropriate extinguisher for a particular type of fire, how to use an extinguisher and how to maintain it. Although this course is no substitute for actual practice, it will provide you with the necessary information.  Click here to take this valuable course.
