The Municipality of Anchorage Emergency Operations Center
On January 27, 2000, the new Emergency Operations Center for the Municipality of Anchorage became operational. This 2-story, 5600 square foot structure houses the daily operations of the Office of Emergency Management. When a disaster occurs, the building becomes the heart of Anchorage's emergency management and operations team, as well as the information center for media.
Constructed in 1949 as a telephone switch center, the building was extensively remodeled to conform to building, fire, and seismic codes. Because of the critical nature of this building, the structural system is reinforced and emergency power is available for continued radio, telephone and data systems operations for over 7 days.
Interested groups can tour the Emergency Operations Center by calling (907) 343-1401 or by emailing a request to wwoem.ci.anchorage.ak.us

The Emergency Operations Center Situation Room is 2,835 square feet of working space for emergency operations, planning and logistics personnel. State of the art fiber-optic telecommunications systems, stand-alone computer systems, two large screen projection systems, and radio communications support were included in the remodel project. Due to the number of computers and the large projection screens, this area is also used for computer training for departments within the Municipality.

The lower floor of the Emergency Operations Center contains the communications section for radios, telephones and computers to support operations and daily work. There is also an Alternate Police and Fire Dispatch center that can act with, or independent of, the primary 911 Dispatch Center. The Dispatch area is also used for training new dispatchers.
