Pets and Disasters
Take these 3 Steps to insure the safety of your pet(s) during a disaster:
1. Have a safe place to take your pets.
-
The Municipality of Anchorage will accept pets at congregate care centers. However, if you do not plan on staying at a congregate care center make sure friends, relatives, and other outside meeting place in your family disaster plan can accomodate your pets.
2. Include pet supplies in your family disaster supplies kit. These items include but are not limited to:
-
Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and/or carriers
-
Medications and medical records
-
Current photos of your pets in case they get lost
-
Five to seven day supply of food, water, bowls, cat litter/pan, and a can opener
-
Pet toys to reduce stress
-
Information on feeding schedules, medical conditions and behavior problems, in case you have to foster or board your pets.
3. Know what to do as a disaster approaches.
-
If you have time, call ahead to confirm shelter arrangements.
-
Check to be sure all necessary pet supplies are included in your disaster supplies kit in case you have to evacuate at a moment's notice.
-
Bring all pets into the house so that you will not have to search for them if you have to leave in a hurry.
-
Make sure all dogs and cats are wearing up-to-date, securely fastened identification collars. If time permits, attach the phone number or address of your temporary shelter with adhesive tape on the back of your pet's collar.
