The Comprehensive All-Hazard
Child Care Facility Planning Guide

The Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the Department of Health and Human Services, has developed a Comprehensive All-Hazard Child Care Facility Planning Guide for child care providers. This Planning Guide will cover 15 potential events that could occur in Anchorage and responses to those events based on best known practices at this time.

A question that is now appearing on the Child Care Licensing worksheet concerns shelters in case it is necessary to evacuate the building. The Office of Emergency Management does not have a specific shelter list because of the potential of any shelter being damaged and unsafe for occupancy after a major disaster.

We recommend that when a provider answers this shelter question, the following be placed in the block: "Depending on the emergency, we will first shelter-in-place if possible. Our second location is ________________(list a local church or community center if one is close by. Do not list a school or fire station as an alternate facility). In the event of a major earthquake, the Municipality of Anchorage will advise the community of safe shelter locations in our area." The second location that you have listed will require making advance arrangements (with the church, neighbor, etc. - your designated alternate location) in advance of any incident.
